Scotland Comes to The Salisbury School

Taking a magical journey, Friday, April 8, 2011, The Salisbury School will transform into Scotland. In our time honored tradition called Global Awareness Day, a country is selected each year for the entire Salisbury School family to learn their unique traditions. When we say “all”, we mean students, faculty and parents alike.

Global Awareness Day is not just a day; it is a culmination of a month of becoming “globally aware” of the assigned country. We incorporate the country into the school curriculum: its people, geography, politics, art, literature, food, history, music, language, customs, dress, science, current issues etc. Classroom teachers, ranging from Pre-K thru grade 12, work within the framework of the country and their curriculum in many creative ways. The libraries and classrooms display artifacts and each grade focuses on the country in its own way. We strive to expand all our horizons. We have “traveled” to 23 amazing places. The mission is to bring the country to life: we call this an experiential journey.

This year, as we travel to Scotland we will see castles, bagpipers, St. Andrews golf, music, dancing, sheep herding, poetry, rugby and perhaps, even the Loch Ness Monster. The students, faculty and families will celebrate with an entire day of Scottish traditions, food and festivities.

An evening reception will be held on Friday evening with a Scottish (Chinese style) auction, a putt-putt challenge, Scottish libations and authentic Scottish cuisine. The evening event, for adults who want to take a mini journey to this beautiful country, will be held on The Salisbury School campus in the Lower School Library and runs from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

The Salisbury School, currently celebrating its 40th year, was founded in 1979 and has a student body of 300. The Salisbury School proudly nurture’s and develops each child’s intellectual potential.
