Feeling like a little “south of the border” for dinner tonight? Leave your passport behind, authentic Mexican food, drinks and atmosphere is now available right here on the Island. Sombrero Mexican Kitchen in Stevensville celebrated its grand opening on June 1st and it’s been a fiesta ever since!
Sombreros had been on the mind of owners Stefanie DiBenedetto and her husband for some time. Long time restaurant owners, who also own Carmines in Chester, they were struck by the lack of Mexican dining choices on Kent Island.
In developing Sombrero, Stefanie wanted to aim for “comfort right off the boat”. Warm colors, open area and inviting décor greet guests as they enter. Many of the décor items were actually purchased at local consignment and antique stores, and give the feeling of walking into a Mexican home for a meal. While they had visited Mexico several times, Stefani says real inspiration came for sitting down with a Mexican chef on several occasions to discuss the menu. One thing that they wanted to achieve was the freshness of their food. Even their sour mix for their margaritas is house made with fresh squeezed citric juice.
Sombrero offers a little something for everyone. With affordable prices, casual atmosphere and a vast menu, they are a prefect family restaurant. They also have a separate bar area, and offer happy hour specials from 3-6 daily, which are available both at the bar and in the restaurant.
With a few weeks now under their belt, Stefani says the response has been tremendous. “Everyone seems really grateful to finally have a choice for Mexican cuisine on the island.” Listening to customer feedback is very important to them. “It’s so important to communicate with guests”, says Stefanie. Experience has taught her the importance of a presence in the house. Either Stefani, her husband or the manager is always at the restaurant, making sure guests are happy. She also is extremely proud of her staff. “They are amazing. They genuinely care about the meal and service they are providing.”
Sombrero is open Sunday-Thursday from 11am-10pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am-11pm. Beginning next week they will offer their “Crazy Local Lunch Specials”. Choose from 10 to 12 menu items plus a drink, for just $7.77, daily 11am-4pm. You can browse their entire menu online at www.sombreromexicankitchen.co or call them at 410-604-1234
