Move over Michael Phelps! Centreville Elementary School is sending three students to represent our area in the Junior Olympics to be held in Houston, Texas on July 27th and 28th. The students qualified by finishing in the top 5 for their age group at the State Tournament in speed stacking, where you must quickly stack cups into specific patterns. Alison Kern, a Physical Education teacher at Centreville Elementary leads the group. “It is amazing to see such a young child put such focus into something.” she says. The following children all qualified at the State Tournament:

William George 8, Kennard Elementary, Madeline George, 6 Centreville Elementary, Malone Grace 6 Centreville Elementary, Abigail Gunther 6, Centreville Elementary, Allison Holdgreve 7, Centreville Elementary, Samantha Holdgreve 5, Centreville Elementary .

Allison, Abigail and Samantha will make the trip to Houston to compete.

Alison has been running the cup stacking club for the past five years and says there are so many children interested in joining, that she invites only those who score high when doing the event in her P.E class. “Right now we have about 30 kids from pre-K to 4th grade involved.” There are 18 events in the Junior Olympics and they are held every 4 years. The students will compete in individual stacking as well as be paired with students from other states for the team relay events. Alison adds: “I am very proud of the dedication and determination that these young students have demonstrated. We have practiced together daily and their effort has resulted in amazing times. They will represent us well.”
