Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Sean C. Hawes, originally from Stevensville, has been named Enlisted Person of the Year for the Coast Guard’s Eighth District, which is headquartered in New Orleans. In selecting Hawes, a marine science technician assigned to the Gulf Strike Team, the Coast Guard cited a number of his accomplishments. They include receiving special recognition from the Unified Command of the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil platform explosion for a variety of duties performed during that emergency; mentoring and training more than 500 personnel and serving as a liaison during a chemical release at a facility in Alabama; and actively participating in his community by helping with events and assisting citizens.
