The Queen Anne’s County Historical Society invites middle and high school students — from both public and private schools — to attend a special Student Night at the Museum on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Wright’s Chance Museum in Centreville.
This interactive evening features the acclaimed exhibit “Astonishing Portraits, Untold Stories: The World of Thomas L. McKenney,” a vivid exploration of early 19th-century Native American portraits commissioned by Thomas L. McKenney, a Maryland native and one of the first advocates for preserving Indigenous dignity and culture.
Students will have the opportunity to:
- Experience rarely seen historical portraits recreated for the first time in generations
- Learn about McKenney’s legacy and Maryland’s connection to Native American history
- Meet local historians and museum volunteers
- Sign up for Community Service Hours and future student volunteer opportunities
Teachers and families are also encouraged to attend. The evening is free of charge, and groups are welcome with advance notice.
“This event is a wonderful opportunity for students to connect history, art, and civic engagement,” said Barbara Pivec, President Emeritus of the Queen Anne’s County Historical Society. “We’ve already welcomed more than 200 visitors in the exhibit’s first month, and Student Night allows us to open the doors even wider to our community’s future historians.”
The exhibit runs through mid-January 2026 and is part of Maryland’s MD250 commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, supported by the Maryland Humanities Inclusive History Grant.
