Modern Families: Same-Sex and Unmarried Couples Wills and Legacy Planning Workshop to be Held

Last-WillModern Families: Same-Sex and Unmarried Couples Wills and Legacy Planning Workshop to be Held

-Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation to Host Event March 29-

For unmarried and same-sex couples in Maryland, there are many unique legal issues to consider during the financial and estate planning process. While some aspects of financial and estate planning for married couples are similar to unmarried couples, many others are vastly different.  Due to legal, religious and societal issues, unmarried and same-sex couples also face real challenges to the execution of their wishes.  Additionally, same-sex couples who have recently become married under the new laws will need to update their estate and financial plans in order to best accomplish their goals.

To help “modern” families (unmarried and/or same-sex couples) navigate the intricacies of financial and estate planning,  Anne Arundel Medical Center’s (AAMC) Foundation will host a complimentary wills and legacy planning event, complete with breakfast, on Saturday, March 29, from 8:30 to 11am.

“To prevent unintended results to their partner and family, it is critical for unmarried and same-sex couples to execute detailed and legally enforceable directives concerning the management of their finances and health care, and the distribution of their assets upon death,” says Jan Wood, AAMC’s Foundation president and chief development officer.

Estate planning attorney, Julie Schejbal, and wealth planner, Jacquelyn Boyer, who have experience and  specialize in planning for same-sex and unmarried couples, will spend the morning providing advice on the best way to plan for a healthy financial future.  David Afzal, MD, a family medicine practitioner who has a special interest in providing primary care to the LGBTQ community, will be available to answer any medical questions.

The event will be held at AAMC’s Belcher Pavilion, 7th Floor, Doordan Institute, 2000 Medical Parkway, Annapolis, Md.

AAMC Foundation Announces New Leadership

Lisa Hillman retired from the Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) Foundation on June 30, concluding her 30-year career at the hospital. During her tenure, the Foundation completed four capital campaigns and raised more than $100 million for capital and programmatic expansion.

Hillman initially served as the hospital’s first director of public relations and led marketing, communications and legislative affairs before assuming director of the Foundation in 1990.

“Lisa has been a tremendous asset to the health system,” said Tori Bayless, AAMC’s President and CEO. “She has not only led many successful fundraising campaigns but she has been generous in her commitment to support the people, programs, services, and facilities that make Anne Arundel Medical Center a nationally recognized and community-cherished hospital.”

Hillman served as chair of the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy, taught numerous classes and seminars and served on scores of expert panels. “She has been a coach and mentor to many in her field, and as a highly effective leader, she has built a very strong team of professionals within the Foundation,” adds Bayless.

“We have been extremely fortunate to have Lisa’s leadership,” said JoAnn DeCesaris, AAMC Foundation board chair. “We could not be more appreciative of the critical role she has played in the development of the larger philanthropic community. Lisa has accomplished a great deal for the hospital and made a difference in the lives of others, strengthening our community.”

Jan Wood is AAMC Foundation president starting July 1. Wood joined the Foundation in 2010 as director of major gifts. Before AAMC, Wood owned a marketing consulting firm in Annapolis that provided fundraising strategies, public relations, market analysis, and business development services to corporations and non-profit organizations across the United States.

In addition, Debbie Daugherty assumes the role of director of advancement. Daugherty, who joined the AAMC Foundation in April, will oversee donor efforts for the organization. Most recently, Daugherty worked as a philanthropic consultant, advising Annapolis-area non-profits in strategic fundraising, grant proposals and event planning. A resident of Annapolis, Daugherty also was the director of advancement for The Key School in Annapolis and grant development director for the Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) Foundation.

AAMC Awards $60K in Nursing Scholarships

Last week, at the Annual Nursing Celebration Dinner at Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC), the AAMC Foundation awarded 12 scholarships totaling $60,000 to deserving AAMC nurses to further their education and careers. Scholarship recipients were selected based on a number of criteria. The annual nurses’ dinner celebrates nurses and recognizes their commitment to the community.

In addition, the Medical-Surgical Unit was awarded the “Extraordinary Advances in Patient and Family Centered Care” Award through the generosity of an endowment from Dick and Janet Davidson. Mr. Davidson is former CEO of the American Hospital Association (AHA), serving from 1991-2007 in that role. From 1969-1991, he served as the first president of the Maryland Hospital Association (MHA). Davidson and his family have endowed this prestigious award.
The scholarships are endowed through donations to the AAMC Foundation from individual and corporate supporters. They are designed to encourage and support AAMC employees who have been employed more than six months and are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate nursing program.

“Our supporters take great pride in honoring our nursing staff and recognize that an investment in nursing is an investment in the future of patient care,” said Lisa Hillman, president of the AAMC Foundation.

“These scholarships will make a difference not only in the lives of the recipients, but they will have a lasting impact on our patients whose lives are touched by a nurse each and every day,” said Sherry Perkins, chief nursing officer and chief operating offer, Anne Arundel Medical Center.

The Nursing Scholarship Endowment began in 1990 as a memorial to Marlene Reiter, a registered nurse at AAMC. Since then, the AAMC Foundation has established an endowment fund and distributed nearly $500,000 to 175 AAMC recipients by donations from community leaders and corporations.
