A Heartfelt Honor for Brenda Dean Abel at the Bosom Buddies Ball

BRENDA ABELBosom Buddies Charities (BBC) honored the late Brenda Dean Abel at their signature fundraising event, the Bosom Buddies Ball, on Saturday, January 19, 2013. Brenda lost her courageous battle with breast cancer on March 16, 2012.

Brenda Dean was a Queen Anne’s County resident and graduate of Queen Anne’s County High School in 1980. She attended Salisbury State College where she met her husband of 24 years, Richard Abel. Along with her husband, Richard, Brenda was the proud parent of two daughters, Alexandra and Carly. Brenda was the beloved daughter of Norma Jean and Donald Dean, and the sister of Donnie, Bruce, and committee member Debbie Dean Scott, all lifetime residents of our County. Brenda was deeply loved by all who knew her; she had a wonderful sense of style and humor. Her friendships were many and deep with admiration and respect. The diagnosis of cancer brought out her courage to fight, not just her battle, but also to inspire and mentor others who were diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2009, she completed and raised funds in the 60-mile “Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure” to help end the disease that eventually took her life.

“We are privileged to be able to celebrate the life of Brenda Abel at this year’s Ball,” said BBC Ball Co-Chair Biana Arentz. “Many of her friends, and most importantly, her family, will be attending the Ball. Honoring one of our heroes who has had breast cancer has become a treasured tradition at the Ball, and not all heroes win their battles. Brenda is one of our heroes, who is now an Angel. We are grateful to have Brenda’s family present as we reflect on her extraordinary life.”

Bosom Buddies Charities has raised over $1.2 million in six years to promote breast cancer awareness, treatment, and support in Queen Anne’s County. The proceeds of past balls have enabled the organization to donate digital mammography equipment to the Kent Island Breast Center, fund a highly successful Survivor Retreat, and support a nurse navigator who provides education, guidance, and emotional support for breast cancer patients. This year, Bosom Buddies will complete their pledge to purchase the Spy Elite equipment, which enables surgeons to access real-time information and modify plans before the patient leaves the operating room. They will also begin funding a Faxitron System, which reduces procedure time in the operating room for breast biopsy and lumpectomy, for the Shore Health Regional Breast Center.

Bosom Buddies Charities is committed to winning the battle against breast cancer and invite others who share this passion to learn more about the organization. Please visit www.bosombuddiescharities.org.

Bank Donates $5000 to Bosom Buddies to Help Beat Breast Cancer

Queenstown Bank Sponsors Bosom Buddies Ball (400 x 598)Bosom Buddies Charities (BBC) has raised $1.2 million in six years to promote breast cancer awareness, treatment, and support in Queen Anne’s County. The organization’s success in harnessing resources to help the community is due in large part to the support and generosity of local businesses like Queenstown Bank.

“Queenstown Bank has a history of community giving, and we are so grateful that Bosom Buddies Charities is one of their priorities,” said BBC Chair Biana Arentz. “The commitment of Bank President J. Thomas Rhodes, Jr. is vital to our cause and to cancer patients in Queen Anne’s County. This year’s Ball is going to help Bosom Buddies fund important medical equipment at both health facilities in our community, Anne Arundel Medical Center and Shore Health System.”

From his perspective, Mr. Rhodes views Bosom Buddies as a true asset to the community. “This is an organization that started from scratch, has grown stronger every year, and channels all its resources into the community. We have a healthier Queen Anne’s County because of their excellent work.”

Bosom Buddies Charities hosts its primary fundraiser, the Bosom Buddies Ball, on an annual basis. This year’s ball, A Touch of the Islands, will be held on January 19, 2013 at the Chesapeake Beach Club. The Island theme will be reflected in the Ball’s décor and music, and as always the evening will be highlighted by gourmet dining, lots of dancing, and a truly extraordinary auction. The Ball is the key to helping Bosom Buddies achieve its mission to promote breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection, support treatment, and celebrate healing.

Bosom Buddies Say “Thanks a Million”

A generous gift from the Centreville National Bank to Bosom Buddies Charities, Inc. resulted in a million dollar milestone achievement for the Eastern Shore organization. The donation presented by Win Trice, President of CNB, raised the five year old charity over the million dollar mark.

Since its inception, the group founded by Susan Ponchock of Stevensville has pursued their mission to promote breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection, support treatment and celebrate healing. Their success has been profound.

In just five years they have provided a digital mammography machine and ultra-sound imaging equipment to the Anne Arundel Medical Center on Kent Island, funded the expansion of the Kent Island Breast Center and initiated monthly support group meetings for survivors, sponsored a Survivor Retreat this fall and are also funding a major ad campaign to remind women to get their mammograms.

In September a “Thanks A Million” party was held at Annie’s Paramount Restaurant on Kent Island to celebrate reaching the milestone and thank all the current and former committee members. Physicians and key members of the Kent Island Breast Center also attended the celebration.

The sixth Annual Bosom Buddies Ball will be held at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club on January 21, 2012. As in the past, businesses and individual donors are stepping up to be part of the successful event. Corporate and individual sponsorships are now available.
