13th Annual White-A-Thon set for April 18: Teeth Whitening Event to Benefit Habitat for Humanity

Coffee and tea drinkers routinely juggle their love for their favorite beverages with their desire for bright, white teeth. But do dazzling smiles really make a difference? Research time and time again ranks a great smile as a top asset for everything from landing a date to landing a great job. However, the most convincing argument is one’s own behavior. So what do you do when you need to look your best for an upcoming important event?

For many Americans teeth whitening is right up there with buying a new outfit and getting their hair styled. Thanks to a regional dental practice residents can get their fix for whiter teeth while benefitting a local non-profit organization, Caroline County Habitat for Humanity.

The 13th annual White-A-Thon will be held on Thursday, April 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins, 10646 River Road, Denton. During the event, Drs. Higgins and Holsinger and their staff donate their time to fit patients for custom whitening trays for upper and lower teeth. Patterson Dental Supply Company, St. Paul, MN, donates all dental and whitening materials. Appointments are not necessary.

Walk-ins are welcome. Participants must be at least 16-years-old. For more information, (410) 479-3644 or (800) 617-3644 in Delaware.

The whitening kits, which usually cost $558.00, will be discounted to $200.00 for this special benefit event. A donation in cash or check made payable to Caroline County Habitat for Humanity will be accepted.

The 2012 event raised $3,340, bringing the total proceeds since the event’s inception to $54,886 – surpassing the benchmark to fund building materials, appliances and building fees and permits for an entire house.

Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins opened in February 1986 and offers the convenience of comprehensive care for adult patients. They provide routine dental check-ups and cleanings as well as cosmetic enhancements to improve the appearance of crooked, chipped, unevenly spaced, or stained teeth. Since 2001 Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins has also provided sedation dentistry for the fearful patient or for those patients who wish to combine multiple procedures in fewer appointments.

Caroline County Habitat for Humanity is a locally run non-profit affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. All donations from the White-A-Thon will go towards construction materials for building houses for families in need in the county.

Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins Raises $3,340 for High Street Habitat for Humanity Project; White-A-Thon Proceeds Now Total $54,886

Twelve years ago Rowland S. Holsinger, D.D.S., and Patricia E. Higgins, D.D.S., approached Caroline County Habitat for Humanity about doing a fundraiser that connected their dental practice with the needs of the community. What resulted was the White-A-Thon, a dental whitening event that offers whitening services at less than half the normal cost with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Habitat. The event has become so successful that last year the total proceeds surpassed $50,000, which is enough to pay for an entire house

The 2012 event raised $3,340, bringing the total proceeds since the event’s inception to $54,886. This year’s funds are supporting construction at 502 High Street, Denton. This project is part of a larger initiative called “Together We Stand,” which will result in the construction of five homes in two years on High and Lincoln streets in Denton. The homes will be built through the traditional “sweat equity” of the future homeowners, along with work from volunteers and local contractors and suppliers.

“Together We Stand” is a way for us to literally build capacity for our projects by bringing together more partners,” says Bill Clemens, executive director, Caroline County Habitat for Humanity. “It is wonderful to have businesses likes Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins who help us on an ongoing basis,” he adds.

The practice incorporates giving as part of its business plan. “Being active in the community as individuals as well as a practice is important,” says Rowland S. Holsinger, D.D.S. “Whether you go to a community event like Caroline Summerfest or come to an event at our practice it should be clear that we care. After all, we are part of the community and have raised our family here,” says Patricia E. Higgins, D.D.S.

Unique Fundraiser Reaches $50,000 Milestone

Eleven years ago a dental practice and Caroline County Habitat for Humanity embarked on a unique relationship that combined a much sought after dental service – teeth whitening – and the practice’s desire to give back and a need in the community – affordable housing. The event, known as the White-A-Thon, takes on a special meaning this year as it approaches $50,000 in total proceeds, which is enough to pay for an entire house.

“When we approached Habitat for Humanity 11 years ago, we never realized how much of a tradition the event would become for our patients and for others who were interested in teeth whitening,” says Patricia A. Higgins, D.D.S. “We just wanted to combine our profession with a local organization in need. It is particularly gratifying that this unique milestone comes in the year we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of our practice,” she adds.

Supporting Lake Creek Court houses

This year’s event will support the completion of the Lake Creek Court homes, a major subdivision in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Federalsburg. Lake Creek Court is a neighborhood of affordable, single-family, three- and four-bedroom homes. Currently six homes are completed. Two more homes are set to be completed by the end of the year.

“It is unusual for us to receive such a significant level of support from one business or event,” says Bill Clemens, executive director, Caroline County Habitat for Humanity.” The proceeds from this one event from this single business gave us the funds to pay for all building materials, appliances and building fees and permits for an entire house. We are tremendously grateful to Smiles By Holsinger & Higgins and their patients,” he adds.
