Memorial Hospital Foundation to Host Charitable Gift Annuities Seminar

Sump and Lee (400 x 330)University of Maryland Memorial Hospital Foundation will host a free seminar, “Earn Higher Income with the Charitable Gift Annuity,” on Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Nick Rajacich Health Education Center, located at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton, 219 S. Washington Street in Easton.

Guest presenters at the seminar are Darian Sump, CPA, Sump & Associates, PC, and F. Graham Lee, Vice President for Philanthropy, University of Maryland Shore Regional Health.

Sump, a Talbot County native, graduated from Salisbury University with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. He is the owner of Sump & Associates, PC, an accounting firm in Easton. The firm provides tax and accounting services to individual, small businesses and non-profit organizations. Sump was active in 4-H as a child and continues the trend of community service the organization instilled in him. He currently serves as a Court Appointed Special Advocate in Talbot County and previously served on the board of directors for that organization. Sump is a member of the Tri-County Ruritan and a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cordova. He is a graduate of Shore Leadership and LEAD Maryland. Sump holds professional membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Lee grew up in Wilson, North Carolina and moved to Talbot County in 1989 from the Baptist Health System, Knoxville, TN. A graduate of Campbell University, he has been a professional fundraiser for 30 years and is active in the Mental Health Association of Talbot County, Rotary Club of Easton and the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy. Lee is a frequent speaker to non-profits on planned giving, capital campaigns, special events and building successful fundraising programs.

With fluctuating stock market prices and low rates for Certificates of Deposit, participants in this seminar will learn why the gift annuity is one of the most flexible forms of giving while receiving high income. The seminar will inform participants about income tax deduction and partially non-taxable income, while providing information about using long term appreciated property where a portion of the capital gains tax is avoided. Sump and Lee will discuss how an individual at age 76 can earn 6.0% for life; age 78 can earn 6.4% for life; and age 84 can earn 7.6% for life. Rates for couples will also be discussed. “If you like the idea of higher income, guaranteed income, fixed income with tax deductions, a charitable gift annuity may be what your retirement plan needs,” says Lee.

For more information or to register for the seminar, please contact Janet Andrews at the Memorial Hospital Foundation (410) 822-1000, extension 5792 or by email at janet@shorehealth.org. This event is free to all attendees; seating is limited and pre-registration is required.
