Volunteer of the Week – Lillian Acosta

Meet Lillian Acosta, a volunteer for Chesapeake Cats and Dogs (CCAD) since September of 2010. Lillian joined CCAD after seeing the organization in action at a fundraising event at her local Safeway store. “My cat Angel died in July of 2010, and due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to get another cat.” Lillian finds volunteering very rewarding, “I volunteer because I enjoy the company of cats and in this way, I can help them and be around them if only for a little while each week. It gives me a lot of joy and satisfaction to play with my furry friends.”

Chesapeake Cats & Dogs was established in 2006 as a no-kill animal shelter. They are dedicated to rehabilitating and providing a second chance to cats and dogs that have been abandoned, abused, lost, strayed or surrendered. CCAD remains committed to helping end the needless overpopulation, death, abuse and neglect of dogs and cats in the area and improving their lives as well as those of their new owners. Their mission is to continue to provide a life of love and dignity for all animals.

CCAD is located at 300A Island Professional Park in Stevensville. You can reach them by calling 410-643-9955 or sending an email to info@chesapeakecats.com Visit their web site at www.ccadcatanddogrescue.org.

Chesapeake Cats and Dogs Waives Adoption Fees During Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month for Cats Over Three Years of Age

To celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month this June, Chesapeake Cats and Dogs (“CCAD”), in collaboration with the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (“ASPCA”) and the makers of Fresh Step® litter (“Fresh Step”), is participating in a fee-waived adoption program to help find loving homes for adult cats.

It’s kitten season, but we’re putting the spotlight on the often-overlooked adult cats.  ASPCA research recently published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that waiving fees for adult cats boosts adoptions without diminishing the value adopters place on their cats.

Often times, adoption fees don’t even offset the costs of spay/neuter/microchipping/food/housing. By offering fee-waived adoptions for adult cats, we can increase adoptions, thus creating space to take in more homeless animals.   More animals can be saved and new cat owners have extra money to spend on their cat.  And, ultimately, the adopted cat has a loving home.  It’s a win-win for all.

The free adoptions will run for the whole month of June for cats three years and older.  All other adoption policies and procedures will remain in effect.  Look for CCAD at Annapolis Whole Foods on 6/4, Art in the Park (Stevensville) on 6/18 and the Book/Bake Sale/Adoptathon at Kent Island Safeway on 6/25.

To see pictures of eligible older cats, visit the CCAD Facebook page or www.ccadcatanddogrescue.org.  For more information, contact CCAD 410-643-9955.

2nd Annual Preakness Celebration Benefits Chesapeake Cats and Dogs

Shackleford won the Preakness, but Chesapeake Cats & Dogs was right there in the winners circle with him.  Once again, hosts Tim and Gail opened their home at East Bay Farm so that many more homeless animals can be rescued.  Corporate Sponsor Caddy Corporation and local businesses also donated time and resources to make this annual event successful.  Guests enjoyed the delicious food provided by Debbie Vogelsang, Fred Beane and It’s the Pits and music by DJ Eric Roberge.  Cats and dogs mingled with the guests, and a good time was had by all.  For more information about Chesapeake Cats & Dogs, visit their Facebook page or call 410-643-9955.

Chesapeake Cats and Dogs 4th Annual Opt to Adopt Day

In conjunction with National Homeless Animals Day, Chesapeake Cats and Dogs (CCAD) will host its Fourth Annual Opt to Adopt Day on Saturday, August 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Safeway in Chester.

In 1992, National Homeless Animals’ Day was introduced as an innovative educational vehicle with a purpose of informing society of an American tragedy that overwhelms animal shelters each year – pet overpopulation.  For four years, Chesapeake Cats and Dogs has recognized this day by holding an adoptathon to encourage pet adoption.  This year, we will be holding an adoptathon, bake sale and book fair.  We encourage everyone to stop by and meet some of the homeless.  (Pictured here is Lola, just one of many hoping for a home.)

All of the proceeds from the book fair and bake sale will be used to provide medical care, food and housing for the homeless cats and dogs in CCAD’s care.  For more information, contact CCAD at 410-643-9955.  More information about CCAD rescues and activities can be found on our Facebook page.

Preakness Celebration raises over $13,000 for Chesapeake Cats and Dogs

On May 15th, the horses were running, but the cats and dogs won! Waterfront at East Bay Farm, the Schaffers and Super Dog, Inc. hosted their Preakness Celebration to benefit Chesapeake Cats and Dogs.  In an effort to support the homeless animals cared for by CCAD, the hosts, sponsors and a team of volunteers organized live and silent auctions, races and an awesome party for more than 100 guests.  Between the open bar at the Starting Gate, musicians Mike & Keri and the great food by Fred Beane, a good time was had by all.

Be watching for information on the 2011 Preakness Celebration as it promises to be bigger and better than this year!
