Grasonville Senior Center announces its September Computer and Technology workshops. Topics include Android Smart Phones, iPhones, Digital Photos, Facebook, Internet Basics, and Wireless Devices. Registration fee is $15 for each 4 week workshop.

Android Smart Phones – If you have an Android cell phone and wish to learn how to properly operate it, you’ve come to the right place.  You will learn how to navigate your phone, how to make voice commands with Google Now (if you have that application), how to customize your screens, and access and download programs designed to enrich your life. You may wish to bring your instruction manual for reference.  Also, we will access the Play Store on your phone, so you’ll need to have your Google Play Account established and set up prior to the first day of class. Mondays Sept. 8, 15, 22, & 29, 10:30am – 12:00pm

iPhones – If you have an iPhone smart phone and wish to learn how to properly operate it, you’ve also come to the right place.  You will learn how to navigate the phone, how to make voice commands with Siri, how to customize your screens, and access and download programs designed to enrich your life.  For this class, we will access the App Store on your phone and you’ll need to have your iTunes Account established and set up prior to the first day of class. Tuesdays Sept. 9, 16, 23, & 30, 10:30am – 12:00pm

Facebook – How many of you have family and friends who use Facebook?  Wouldn’t you like to join in on the fun and see why everyone you know uses it?  In this class, you learn the importance of Facebook, how to use it safely, how to create and customize a profile, and how to find and communicate with your contacts. Tuesdays Sept. 9, 16, 23, & 30, 12:30pm – 2:00pm

Internet Basics – This class is best for the individual who doesn’t know anything about the internet and wishes to learn.  We’ll start with opening Internet Explorer, understanding the layout of various web pages, inputting website addresses, and conducting searches in search engines, so you can learn the basics and grow into a functional internet user. Wednesdays Sept. 3, 10, 17, & 24, 10:30am – 12:00pm

Wireless Devices – Wi Fi service in coming to Grasonville Senior Center! This session will teach us how to use our wireless devices, such as Lap Tops and Tablets. Please call the center to learn exactly which type of device will be discussed in this September workshop. Wednesdays Sept. 3, 10, 17, & 24, 12:30pm – 2:00pm

Grasonville Senior Center announces a Holiday bus trip to see Cirque Dreams Holidaze at the Du Pont Theatre in Wilmington DE on Wednesday December 10, 2014. Participants will enjoy a delicious Buffet Luncheon at the historic Du Pont Hotel before the show.

Cirque Dreams Holidaze is a rock opera, circus, musical, and holiday show all rolled into one!  The premise of the show is that the ornaments of a Christmas tree have come to life, and we can see what they do when they think we aren’t looking. The costumes are bright and beautiful, and all the holiday favorites can be found.  There are reindeer, gingerbread men, toy soldiers, penguins, puppets, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus and many more. Cirque Dreams Productions has gathered some of the best performers from around the world and combined them into a holiday show like none other.  Guests will not be disappointed.

This spectacular day trip cost $115 per person and includes motor coach transportation, buffet luncheon, and show admission. A deposit of $20 is due at time of sign up and balance is due by Nov. 7.  Motor coach will depart Grasonville Senior Center 9:30am and a second pick-up location is offered at Rt. 301S & Rt.300W Park & Ride departing 10:00am.

Creating PowerPoint Presentations – How many of you have seen a PowerPoint presentation and thought to yourself, “I wish I could do that?”  Well, you can!  In this class, you will learn how to create PowerPoint presentations from scratch and how to make them come alive with pictures, sound, and animation.  Class meets Wednesdays June 4, 11, 18 & 25 / 12:30pm – 2:00pm

COMPUTER CLASSES OFFERED FOR SENIORS

Grasonville Senior Center announces computer classes for the Spring Session through Chesapeake College Continuing Education and Workforce Training Program.  These courses are designed for senior adults, aged 60 or better, with little or no computer knowledge.

Instructor James Adams will offer Beginner Computers, Advanced Computers, and Internet Basics.

Beginner Computer Class is offered Wednesdays March 12 – April 16, 10:00am – 12:00pm. This class for the inexperienced student will introduce parts of the computer and their functions, terminology, and proper use of the keyboard and mouse. Class will begin with the Start Menu and progress with each persons comfort level.

Advanced Computer Class is offered Wednesdays March 12 – April 16, 12:30pm – 2:30pm. This class will discuss to use of Microsoft Applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as social media websites. Practice exercises will include creating letters in Word, budgets in Excel, and presentations in PowerPoint. In addition, the class will learn to create profiles, post photos, and contact friends and family members on social media websites.

Internet Basics Class will discuss the internet and its advantages. Students will learn to use internet browsers, search engines, and create a Google email account. Students will also learn how to safely search online items of interest to them.

Mon., Feb. 17, 6PM, highlighting its’ Christmas on the Danube tour.

Travel dates are November 29 – December 7, 2014. Highlights include Vienna, Vienna Opera House, Hofburg Palace, Wachau Valley, Passau, Regensburg, Nuremberg, Christmas Markets, Rothenburg, and Wurzburg. The 9 day tour includes 19 meals made up of 7 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 7 dinners.  Round trip air from BWI, air taxes and fees/surcharges, and hotel transfers are also included in the package.  Cost per person, double occupancy ranges from $2999 – $3499 depending upon cabin selection and when booked before March 31, 2014. Free Seminar: Holiday Help

Ask the Undertaker – Holiday Help series will be offered at Grasonville Senior Center Thursday, December 12, 10:00AM.

The Holidays are upon us! Many of us describe this season as the “most wonderful time of the year.” Unfortunately this doesn’t hold true for everyone. The Holidays may become a time of mourning and grief for those who have lost a loved one during these months or this year. As a friend or family member of grieving individuals we often are unsure how to help.

Presenter Ryan Helfenbein will address many frequently asked questions regarding the topic of helping others cope with the holiday season. Topics of discussion will include:
How to help a friend / family member through the Holiday season
What to say when you see the friend or family member
Determine which modern means of therapy may be acceptable to them
How to help a family with young children
Keeping a friend / family member active and involved during the Holidays

Educational Seminars for Seniors

A series of Financial Educational Seminars for seniors will be offered by Queen Anne’s County Department of Community Services, Area Agency on Aging. The free seminars will take place once each month from November 2013 through April 2014 at Grasonville Senior Center.

The topic of Health Care and Your Retirement will be presented on Dec 10, 10:30AM. It will address which steps investors should take to prepare for health care costs to help ensure their retirement savings stay healthy (including Medicare and long term care costs).

Participants are invited to stay for lunch following the presentation. Advance reservation is required for a lunch. Suggested donation for the meal is $2. Gaither Vocal Band Day Trip

Gather your friends and join Grasonville Senior Center on May 16, 2014 for its newest day trip to see Bill Gaither Vocal Band at American Music Theatre in Lancaster PA.

This evening of entertainment features some of the best loved voices in gospel music today, known around the world for their powerhouse vocals, innovative harmonies and life-altering message of grace, hope and redemption.

Motor Coach departs 2pm and returns approx. midnight. Dinner will be on-your-own at Texas Road House. Showtime is 7:30pm. Cost $80 includes transportation and admission. Deposit of $20 is required at time of sign up and balance is due by April 11, 2014. The group will pass an envelope for bus driver tip.
