Educational Seminars for Seniors

A series of Financial Educational Seminars for seniors will be offered by Queen Anne’s County Department of Community Services, Area Agency on Aging. The free seminars will take place once each month from November 2013 through April 2014 at Grasonville Senior Center.

A variety of topics will be discussed including, A Woman’s Guide to Money Matters on Nov. 5, Health Care and Your Retirement on Dec. 10, Managing Your Retirement Income on Jan. 7, Rules of the Road for Investors on Feb. 4, Making Your Money Last and Social Security on Mar. 4, and The Advantages of an Estate Plan on April 1.

All seminars will be held from 10:30AM – 12:00PM. Participants are invited to stay for lunch following the presentations. Advance reservation is required for a lunch. Upcoming Chesapeake College Courses at Grasonville Senior Center

Grasonville Senior Center has begun registration for upcoming Fall & Winter classes. All classes are taught at the senior center by qualified instructors contracted with Chesapeake College. Advance registration is necessary and fees vary with each class. Participants must be age 60 or better. The new classes will begin the first week of November.

Healthy Living for Older Adults classes include Yoga Mondays at 8:30, Better Balance with Tai Chi Mondays and Wednesdays at 11:00, Line Dancing Mondays at 1:30, Ballroom Dancing Tuesdays at 1:00, and Zumba Thursdays at 9:30.

Craft Design and Production classes include Ceramics Mondays at 12:30, Traditional Rug Hooking Wednesdays at 12:30 and Oil Painting Thursdays offered at 9:30 and again at 12:30.

Computer related classes include Computer Basics for seniors (Beginners) Wednesdays at 10:00, Intermediate Computer Skills (Intermediate) Wednesdays at 12:30, and Internet Basics (Research and Social Networking) Thursdays at 10:00.

Lunch & Learn Presentation

Grasonville Senior Center will host a Lunch & Learn presentation by the National Aging in Place Council on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at 12:00PM. The National Aging in Place Council is an association of local service providers dedicated to helping aging persons continue to lead a comfortable and healthy life in their homes. The NAIPC offers practical advice in the following areas: Housing, Finances, Health, Transportation, Education, and Entertainment. Anyone interested in learning more about NAIPC and its services are welcome to attend this free presentation. A special lunch will be provided with advance reservation. Virtual Dementia Tour

Grasonville Senior Center is pleased to announce it will host a Virtual Dementia Tour on Tuesday, October 8, at 11:00AM. The tour is designed to help family caregivers understand the physical and mental challenges of those with dementia by using simulation tools to assist in understanding the condition. The program will build sensitivity and awareness in individuals caring for those with dementia. This free presentation is provided by BrightStar Eastern Shore. Weight Loss Challenge

Grasonville Senior Center welcomes new participants to the fall session of 2013 Weight Loss Challenge. With the guidance of a “coach”, participants will work towards their weight loss goals and improve their overall health. The class incorporates lecture, hand outs, group support, taste testing and weigh ins. Various topics discussed in the 8 week class include protein, calories, digestion, carbohydrates, hydration, fats, exercise, and heart health. Prizes will be awarded to the top three “losers” at the program conclusion. Class meets each Friday 9:00 AM beginning Sept. 13 – Nov. 1. Participants must be age 60 or better. Diabetes Nutrition Seminar

Grasonville Senior Center will host an informative Diabetes Nutrition Seminar Sept.12 12:30 pm. Dietitian, Karen Hollis with the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will present tips for healthy eating including guidelines for carbohydrate intake. A Question and Answer session will follow the presentation. Anyone with a desire to learn more about diabetes is welcome to attend. Finger Lakes NY Trip

Pack your bags! Grasonville Senior Center has planned a motor coach trip to Finger Lakes NY and Boldt Castle July 8 – 11, 2014.

Package highlights include Corning Museum of Glass, Winery tour and tasting, National Soaring Museum, Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion, Wegmans Marketplace, Willards Memorial Chapel, Skaneateles Lake sightseeing cruise, 1000 Islands cruise and Boldt Castle with free time in Alexandria Bay area. Also included are 3 nights lodging, 3 breakfasts, 3 dinners, and motor coach transportation.

Cost for this cool summer get-a-way is $540 pp double occupancy. Single supplement additional $139. Optional insurance is available. Portugal Trip Planned

Grasonville Senior Center announces its upcoming trip planned for Portugal and its Islands featuring the Estoril Coast, Azores and Madeira Islands. Adults of all ages are invited to a slide show presentation 5:00pm Sept. 10, 2013.

Travel dates are April 25 – May 7, 2014. Highlights include Lisbon, Folkloric/Fado Dinner Show, Portuguese Riviera, Fatima, Obidos, St. Michael Island – Azores, Plantation Visits, Ponta Delgada, Sete Cidades, Furnas Valley, Nordeste, Madeira Island, Camara de Lobos, Cabo Girao, Sao Vicente, Porto Moniz, Santana, Monte, Espetada Dinner/ Show, and more. The 13 day tour includes 18 meals made up of 11 breakfasts, 1 lunch, and 6 dinners. Round trip air from BWI, air taxes and fees/surcharges, and hotel transfers are also included in the package. Cost per person, double occupancy is $3849 when booked before October 25, 2013.

Flea Market

Grasonville Senior Center is now seeking vendors for its annual Big Inside Flea Market to be held September 14, 8AM – 12:30PM. The event will be held Rain or Shine at Grasonville Senior Center, 4802 Main Street Grasonville and is open to the public of all ages. Tables are available to rent for $10 each. Items of interest include Yard Sale, Flea Market and White Elephant items only. Reservations can be made by calling Ann Martin (410) 827-6010.

Keys to Wisdom Workshops

The Queen Anne’s County Department of Community Services will host EmPOWER Maryland, a workshop conducted by Mr. Michael Hoy, Delmarva Power’s Customer and Community Relations Manager, on Thursday, July 11th at 10:30 a.m. at the Grasonville Senior Center. This workshop is part-two of a six-month series of educational seminars being offered at senior centers throughout the county. Participants of EmPOWER Maryland can expect to obtain Energy Management and Energy Assistance Information as well as understand Delmarva Power’s policies and programs.

The seminar is free and morning pastries are compliments of Corsica Hills Center. Lunch will be offered for a small donation of $2.00. Lunch must be ordered in advance.
