Have you ever heard that you should entertain strangers as you may be entertaining angels unaware? Well, if you are entertaining the Cancer Comfort Angels it would be very hard to be unaware! This gregarious group of Kent Island friends is in full swing again for their yearly walk to be held on Sunday, October 21st to raise funds for Cancer research, scholarships, and their “Comfort Kits”.
In 2008, founder Laurie Rasinski was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Early on, she received a homemade blanket from a young family friend and was inspired to pass on that act of comfort and kindness to others who need love and support during their journey with cancer. Each kit includes a homemade blanket (for comfort), a cross (for support) and words of prayer (for encouragement).
“Plans are really coming together for this year’s walk which will open up for registration at 10:30 AM at Love Point Park and followed by a dinner starting at 2 PM at Kentmorr Restaurant with a Silent Auction,” Laurie explains. We are also introducing our new bracelet for this year, “Remembrance”.
So far, committee member Sue Baxter in charge of the Silent Auction has been able to line up donations from the business community such as Club One, Annie’s, The Narrows, Hilton Garden Inn, The Country Petaller, Merle Norman, and many others!
This year’s theme is “Hunting for a Cure…Save the Racks!” with camouflage shirts for walkers that sign up before October 1st. The Cross Island Trail will be decorated with in a hunting motif.
Anyone interested in participating in the walk can visit the Cancer Comfort Angels website at www.cancercomfortangels.org and under events, you can download the registration form along with a form to collect donations from those who sponsor your walk. Tickets to our Dinner/Silent Auction are $20 for adults, and $10 for children under 10. To order tickets, please fill our bottom portion of registration form, or contact an angel.
As a non-profit agency affiliated with the Foundation for Community Partnerships, Cancer Comfort Angels is a Christian based organization that has a mission to inspire and encourage beyond the clinical prognosis of cancer to help someone both in body and spirit.
