Joslin Diabetes Center is Changing Its Name

On February 1, the Joslin Diabetes Center will change its name to the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System.

“This name change reflects the many positive service enhancements that have occurred in recent years and that will continue as we develop this specialty service with our partners at the University of Maryland Medical System,” says Christopher Mitchell, MSN, RN, Director of Outpatient and Emergency Services for Shore Health System.

Under the medical direction of endocrinologist Kenneth Ligaray, MD, the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System offers a program of medical management and education for individuals diagnosed with diabetes. The clinic is also a resource for people who require medical care for thyroid conditions, osteoporosis and other endocrinology conditions.

“Patients treated at the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System will receive the same high-quality diabetes care and see the same responsive staff, which includes a certified diabetes nurse and dietitian educators,” explains Jacquie Mowbray, MHA, BSN, RN, Nurse Manager for the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System.
Mowbray adds, “As part of our ongoing efforts to make our services more convenient, a physician referral is no longer necessary before making an appointment. We work with our patients to help them get appointments in a timely manner and to meet the requirements of their insurance providers.”

The staff of the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at Shore Health System stays in touch with the physicians who send their patients to the clinic. “Our service is one of many tools available to primary care physicians,” explains Dr. Ligaray. “We communicate with a patient’s primary care physician to give these doctors the information they need to manage the many aspect of their patients’ care.”

Dr. Ligaray adds, “Our goal is to help people understand diabetes and to assist them so that they comply with the medical and lifestyle steps that keep them healthy and prevent healthcare emergencies.”

Diabetes Support Group Speaker to Discuss Research and Education

On Wednesday, December 15 at 7:00 p.m. Carlos Mir from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) will be the featured speaker at the monthly diabetes support group offered by the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Shore Health System. Mir will discuss the ADA’s commitment to diabetes research and education for individuals and healthcare providers.

The program is free and open the public. Light refreshments will be served. Advance registration is required.

Diabetes Center Offers Education and Support

The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Shore Health System is a valuable resource for individuals diagnosed with diabetes. The center, which is located at The Memorial Hospital at Easton, offers educational programs and support groups led by nurses and a dietician who are certified diabetes educators.

Shore Health System offers a multidisciplinary diabetes program, which includes the services of endocrinologists and certified diabetes educators.

“Education is our primary focus when working with people who have been diagnosed with diabetes,” says Nancy Barger, RN, CDE, diabetes specialist for Shore Health System. “We are here to offer advice on how to prevent the early symptoms of diabetes from developing into a more serious medical condition.”

An Insulin Pump Support Group meets every other month in the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate classroom at Memorial Hospital. The next meeting is November 17 at 6:30 p.m. This is a free resource for adults and parents of children who use insulin pumps.

The Diabetes Support Group meets on the third Wednesday of the month. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The guest speaker for the November meeting is Sally Worm, RN, who will discuss “Making Exercise Work for You.” The free session is open to individuals with diabetes and the friends and family members who support them.

The Joslin Diabetes Center offers diabetes education classes on a variety of topics. Participants learn about medication and nutritional management; blood glucose monitoring; acute and long term complications of the disease; and the emotional aspects of diabetes. Participants also learn about other community resources that are available.

Patients can call the Joslin clinic directly for an appointment. The staff will assist patients in obtaining a referral from their physician if one is needed. Prior to the start of diabetes education classes, participants will meet with a certified diabetes educator for an individual assessment.

Joslin Diabetes Center Names Medical Director

Kenneth Patrick Ligaray, MD, has joined the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Shore Health System as medical director. Dr. Ligaray specializes in endocrinology and the treatment of diabetes.

Dr. Ligaray graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. He completed residency training at the University of Illinois at Chicago Advocate Christ Medical Center and a fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism at the St. Louis University Hospital in Missouri. Dr. Ligaray is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and endocrinology.

Prior to joining the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Shore Health System, Dr. Ligaray was assistant professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine.

Joslin Diabetes Center Physician Earns Quality Award

James Mersey, MD, received Diabetes Program Recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for his work at the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Shore Health System. The NCQA Diabetes Recognition Program identifies clinicians who provide high value, patient–centered care for individuals with diabetes.

The DRP requirements are selected and based upon scientific evidence supporting their relevance to improve care for people with diabetes. Clinicians who demonstrate high-quality performance, based upon these key requirements, help their patients avoid additional complications of diabetes.

The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Shore Health System is offering Carbohydrate Counting, a class for people with diabetes who want to learn more about carbohydrates in food and how those foods affect their blood glucose.

The next class will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 10:00 am to noon, at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. The cost of the session is $35. Advance registration is required. Participants will learn how to use carb counting to create a meal plan.

Pain Specialist to Discuss Diabetic Neuropathy

On Wednesday, February 17, the diabetes educators from the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Shore Health System are hosting a presentation about nerve damage associated with diabetes, commonly referred to as diabetic neuropathy. The guest speaker is pain specialist Jennifer Marks, DO, who will discuss the causes and treatments available for diabetic neuropathy.

The session will be held from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Joslin Diabetes Center at Memorial Hospital, 219 S. Washington Street in Easton. The program is free and open to individuals who have been diagnosed with diabetes and the family and friends who support them.

Board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Dr. Marks practices pain management at Shore Comprehensive Pain Care at Memorial Hospital.

Joslin Center Adds Certified Diabetes Educator

Blood Deborah head shot 1209 (281 x 400)Deborah L. Blood, RD, LDN, CDE, has joined the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Shore Health System as a certified diabetes educator and wellness coach. In this role, she will work with the center’s team of nurses and physicians to assess, educate and coach individuals and groups about living with diabetes.

Blood is a graduate of Keene State College in New Hampshire, where she earned a bachelor of science in dietetics. A registered dietitian since 1996, she has been a certified diabetes educator for ten years and is also a certified wellness coach.

Before relocating to Easton to join Shore Health System, Blood worked in hospitals and outpatient centers in New England, where she offered diabetes education and nutrition counseling. She was most recently an online wellness coach for Waterfront Media’s Everyday Health Network.

Blood is a member of the American Dietetics Association, American Association of Diabetes Educators, Diabetes Care and Education Practice Group, the Wellness Coach Association, and the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition Practice Group.
