KI Senior Center Knitters Donate Patriotic Lapghans for Veteran Hospice Patients

Four members of the Kent Island Senior Center in Stevensville recently completed 20 lapghans, all individually designed with red, white and blue yarn for patients of Hospice of Queen Anne’s who are military veterans.

As part of HQA’s Veterans Recognition Program, patients are recognized individually in a private ceremony, which typically takes place at the bedside with family and hospice staff present. Each veteran is presented with a framed certificate of appreciation along with a pin, tabletop American flag and the patriotic lapghan.

“Hospice of Queen Anne’s believes it is never too late to give our patients who have served our country a hero’s welcome home as the end of their journey approaches,” said Jen Thomas, HQA director of volunteers and coordinator of the Veterans Recognition Program.

The ladies keep their fingers busy knitting at the center and at home to make not only the patriotic lapghans, but also enough inventory to sell at the gift corner located in the lobby of the Senior Center.

“We knit all kinds of things, hats, mittens, even padded hangers, and sell them during the cooler months,” said Phyllis Treadwell.

“All the proceeds benefit the hospice patients, and this year we were able to give $310,” said Carmen Coris.

“We started meeting on Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m. at the Senior Center three years ago, and we’ve been meeting ever since,” said Dolores Caputo.

“We just love getting together and helping hospice in this way!” said Sandra Hamilton.

If you would like to donate red, white or blue yarn for the patriotic lapghans or other knitted projects for hospice patients, please contact the “Hospice Knitters” at the Kent Island Senior Center.

Hospice of Queen Anne’s is a fully licensed, nonprofit organization serving Queen Anne’s and surrounding counties whose professionals provide the highest quality compassionate care for individuals in the advanced stages of illness and support for the loved ones who care for them.

Free Help Creating a Living Will May 1st

The Mid-Shore Pro Bono, in collaboration with the Queen Anne’s County Senior Centers, joins The Elder Law Section Council of the Maryland State Bar Association in a state-wide initiative to provide free preparation of Advance Directives in Senior Centers throughout Maryland on Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Volunteer attorneys from Mid Shore Pro Bono, Inc. will be at all 3 Senior Centers preparing free Living Will documents for seniors.

The document is an easy to complete “advance directive” or living will that addresses all your personal needs- the medical and legal, but also your emotional, family, and spiritual needs. It also lets you choose the person you want to make medical decisions for you if you are not able to make them for yourself.

Completing a Living Will is a gift to your family, friends, and your doctors because it keeps them out of the difficult position of having to guess what kind of treatment you want or don’t want. Second-guessing, guilty feelings and family disagreements are avoided when everyone knows your wishes ahead of time.

All documents meet the legal requirements for Maryland. You can change it at anytime by completing a new one and destroying the old one.

Everyone over the age of 18 is encouraged to have an advance directive. We challenge everyone to take control of how you want and expect to be treated at the end of your life.

Seniors age 60 and over should call their local senior center to set up an appointment for free assistance with obtaining and completing anAdvance Directive document at one of our senior centers on Tuesday, May 1, 2011. Call now, space is limited.
