KIVFD Wine Pairing

Wine enthusiasts joined together at a fundraiser for emergency services at the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department recently. They enjoyed fine wines carefully paired with the food offerings of 14 restaurants. Tours of the modern fire station were available with visitors returning home with pictures of themselves sitting in the fire apparatus. Others were the winning bidders on auction items including a resort stay in Belize, a wine cooler and a bed and breakfast stay with dinner at a fine dining restaurant. Everyone left with a well-satisfied appetite, the enjoyment of great wines and company and a commemorative wine glass.

KIVFD Wine Pairing

Saturday, March 24th marks the seventh year for the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department’s Wine Pairing to raise funds for its voluntary delivery of emergency services. The focus is great food paired with a perfect complimentary wine.

Fire Department Chairman of the Board, Francis Roudiez is working hard with fellow volunteers and has already lined up restaurants and caterers such as The Narrows, Rustico Restaurant, Café Sado, Rams Head Shore House, Love Point Deli, It’s the Pitts, Peace of Cake, Chesapeake Chocolates and Fisherman’s Inn and Fisherman’s Crab Deck. The dishes will include everything from sushi to pit beef, from shrimp and crab bruschetta to spinach salad with goat cheese, figs and nuts as well as wild mushroom and crab risotto. Your evening will end with assorted pastries and chocolates accompanied by dessert wines.

Silent Auction items are accumulating to tempt the adventurous. So far, there is a resort stay in Belize, a day on the bay on a 42 foot trawler, a Raven’s area rug, Orioles opening day tickets and parking pass just to name a few. Paula’s Fine Jewelry has also donated a unique piece of jewelry and those who want to see the area from above will be able to bid on a plane ride out of the Bay Bridge Airport.

Three key players that have not changed are the Title Sponsors and Wine Glass Sponsor. Bank Presidents Tommy Rhodes with Queenstown Bank of Maryland and Win Trice of CNB, have both stepped up to sponsor the event again this year. Likewise, Bayside Physical Therapy has agreed to sponsor the wine glasses again and the first 200 through the door will benefit from that sponsorship!

Tickets to the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department’s Wine Pairing Extravaganza are $75 in advance and $80 at the door. They are for sale at Baker’s Liquors, Western Tire & Auto and Love Point Deli, Wine & Spirits; all on Kent Island. The event will be held on Saturday, March 24th from 7 to 10 PM at 1610 Main Street in Chester. For more information or to place a reservation, please call Sandra Early at 410-643-6288.

K.I.Cruisers Donation

Surrounded by members of each organization, KIVFD VP Don Lewis accepts a check from KI Cruiser President Bob Sitar in the amount of $1400 for the Halloween Cruise In Car Show that took place in October. Since 2003, the Cruisers have donated over $15,000 to the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department mainly to support the new station.

Kent Island V.F.D Annual Carnival

In addition to many Midway rides and games, this year’s carnival will feature ice cream, snowballs, crab cakes, Rita’s Italian ice and treats and bingo. The Life Safety Trailer will be on location to provide children and adults with information regarding how they can protect themselves and their loved ones from injuries and death. If you are between the ages of 14 and 16 years old, you’ll want to talk to one of the Kent Island V.F.D’s Cadets to see how you can become a Cadet Member and volunteer with your fire department. Ride tickets can be purchased at the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Station, the Queenstown Bank and the CNB Bank.

Sixth Annual Wine Pairing Extravaganza to Benefit the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department

Great food paired with great wines will again be the focus of the annual Wine Pairing Extravaganza to raise funds for the new Kent Island Volunteer Fire station. The event will be held this year on a new night…SATURDAY, March 26th at the new station in Chester. New committee chair, Jim McCarthy is excited about his first year at the reigns. “I am thrilled to be working on an event that has such a wonderful history of success and look forward to raising even more funds and awareness for this worthy cause.”

Coming back to the Wine Pairing will be a Silent Auction. Advisory Council Leader Tom Helfenbein is chairing the committee this year along with Francis Roudiez, Lisa McCarthy and Lori Jo Shelton. “We’ve really made an effort to find items that are different and will appeal to our generous donors,” stated Tom.

So far the committee has lined up a few extraordinary items such as a boat ride to the Thomas Point Light House with dinner to be prepared and served by Annapolis Catering. (Details to be announced at a later date!) There’s also a committee member working on getting a one of kind item from renowned Hong Kong haute couture designer, Barney Cheng for Wine Pairing participants who have a passion for fashion!

This year’s event will see the return of many of the same restaurants and caterers. Committee member Jane Rajotte has been busy lining up restaurants such as It’s the Pits and Ram’s Head Shore House. Plus Wheeler Baker of Baker’s Liquors, has returned as the wine pairing coordinator and promises that there will be something to please even the most selective of palates! Pasta dishes, smoked meats, sushi, crab delicacies and chocolate delights will be plentiful!

Harvest BrewFest 2010

A good time was had by all on November 5th at the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Harvest BrewFest held at Fisherman’s Crab Deck!

Over 200 attendees received complimentary beer mugs from Bayside Physical Therapy as the walked through the doors. Title Sponsors CNB and Queenstown Bank made it possible for attendees to make the rounds to ten local restaurants serving savory specialties which were paired with microbrews from G&G Distributors and Kelly Distributing.

Also present was local author Brent Lewis who sold and signed his new book “A History of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department”.

All told, the event, chaired by local KIVFD supporter Jim McCarthy, raised $7,500 for the new station.

Two Hurt In Wet-Weather EMS Crash

Two emergency responders from Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department were treated and released at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after the ambulance they were in apparently skidded on the wet road and struck a fence and trees on Cox Neck Road near the Bridgepointe community. KIVFD Medic 1 was responding to a call on Riverside Drive when the crash occurred. No patients were on board. Queen Anne’s County Emergency Services, the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office and KIVFD responded to the crash. Manuela E. Lauer of Glen Burnie, EMT-Intermediate, and Gray Maggard of Annapolis, EMT, had to be cut from the vehicle. Both were taken to the hospital by county paramedic units with non-life-threatening injuries. By 5:30 p.m., a hospital spokesman said both had been treated and released.

KIVFD History Book To Be Released At Cash Bash!

The History of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department is due for a “soft release” at the upcoming Cash Bash on September 18th. Anyone fortunate enough to get a ticket to the Cash Bash (which was sold out in only a few months) will be part of the special crowd to get an early glimpse at a new book about the KIVFD. It will also be an opportunity to buy a copy and if these books are anything like a Cash Bash ticket, you better buy them now!

According to author, Brent Lewis, “This idea was brought to me by KIVFD president Jody Schulz after the realization island native Billy Lane was the organization’s last surviving original member.” Lewis had just finished a book published by The History Press titled Remembering Kent Island so this author was the perfect writer to conduct oral history interview with past KIVFD members and current leadership.

This book is meant to provide a short narrative history of Kent Island’s last six decades through the eyes of some of the people in our community who have devoted themselves to  providing their neighbors with emergency services. And although this is the story of one specific volunteer fire department, it’s also meant to reflect the compassion, bravery, dedication and kinship universal in the mettle of those who serve.

The History of the Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department will include photos provided by various members of the department and community. Chapters include the department’s early years, various volunteers past and present, equipment and training, changing times and modern times, the carnival, parades and fund raising/social functions.

The book’s preface states, “Even if you’ve never personally experienced the tragedy of losing all your possessions—or even worse, loved ones—to fire or accident, there is an awareness of that potential horror ingrained in all of us. Everybody’s life, either intimately or through association, can be touched by misfortune and catastrophe. Sometimes life is harsh. Yet there are those among us who volunteer their time, their effort and even their lives to making the rest of us safer. They provide us with the chance, improve the odds, that maybe the worst moments of our existence might turn out okay after all. They make life a little less harsh.”

To read more, come out as a guest to the Cash Bash ($30 at the door) or make sure to mark your calendar for main unveiling on November 5th at the Harvest BrewFest held at Fisherman’s Crab Deck to benefit the KIVFD building fund. Call Sandra Early at 410-643-6288 for more information.
