Wye Mills, MD

Most people recognize Martin Luther King Day by taking a day off work or school; perhaps catching up on some personal chores, or just enjoying the down time. This MLK Holiday, Wye River Upper School students took a different approach and began a new school tradition in the process. WRUS students and faculty spent the day volunteering with four local organizations that support our community: The Animal Rescue Foundation (Chester), The Corsica Hills Nursing Home (Centreville), St. Martin’s Ministries (Ridgley) and the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (Grasonville). Students were not overly enthusiastic at first about working on what would typically be a holiday; but as the groups reported back at the end of their volunteer day, it was clear that everyone felt charged by the good deeds they had accomplished. “Dr. King spent his life emphasizing the importance of serving others. What better way to honor his memory than volunteering in the community with people who need our support?” stated WRUS teacher, Mr. Cowan. Each organization was very appreciative of the hard work put in by the students. Shelby Ruff, Recreation Director of Corsica Hills Nursing Home said, “The (WRUS) students did very well interacting with our residents and I was impressed with how mature they were.  I hope when the school moves to Centreville the students will come visit us often.”

Students did everything from raking leaves, to cleaning animal cages, socializing with nursing home residents, to organizing and packing food for the needy.  Among King’s many famous quotes, is the following, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”  WRUS students learned the truth behind those words, while each gave a helping hand to their community this holiday.

Wye River Upper School is a college preparatory high school for grades 9-12 offering a supportive, yet challenging curriculum for students with a wide range of learning styles and needs such as ADHD, ADD and dyslexia. For more information, please contact:
