Anne Arundel Medical Center Hosts National Cancer Survivors Day

Survivors, Caregivers, Family and Friends Invited to Celebrate ‘Living Life in Full Bloom’

Anne Arundel Medical Center’s (AAMC’s) DeCesaris Cancer Institute is hosting National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 9 from noon to 4pm to celebrate the lives of those affected by cancer. Cancer survivors, caregivers, family members, friends, and healthcare professionals will unite to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive. This annual, worldwide celebration of life is held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States, and around the world. AAMC is hosting the event for a fourth year in a row.

“This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and honor all cancer survivors who have survived the challenges of treatment and who are now celebrating their life in full bloom,” says Cathy Copertino, executive director of the AAMC DeCesaris Cancer Institute.

Participants will meet NASCAR driver and cancer survivor, Donnie Neuenberger, hear a keynote by Scott Burton, comedian and motivational speaker, on “Looking for Laughter in All the Wrong Places,” and attend free workshops from health care providers on topics such as “The Power of Positive Thinking byDr. Tom Muha, the “achieving happiness” psychologist. During the workshops, cancer survivors will learn about the benefits of nutrition and exercise as well as learn about the future of cancer care from various experts.

Other activities include face painting, cup stacking demos, caricature portraits, photo sessions with medical care providers, hand massage, raffle prizes, exhibits and more.

According to the Maryland State Council on Cancer Control, as of 2009, there were more than 290,000 Marylanders who were cancer survivors, comprising more than 20 percent of the population 65 years and older. Typically, cancer survivors are reported to have very stable mental health and are more active in the maintenance of their health after the diagnosis of cancer. They are enlightened advocates not only for themselves but also for those who will come after them.

AAMC to Host National Cancer Survivors Day

Anne Arundel Medical Center’s (AAMC’s) DeCesaris Cancer Institute is hosting an event to commemorate National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 10, 2012, celebrating the lives of those affected by cancer. Cancer survivors, caregivers, family members, friends, and healthcare professionals will unite to show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive. This annual, worldwide celebration of life is held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States, Canada, and other participating countries. AAMC is hosting the event for a third year in a row.

“There are almost 12 million cancer survivors in the United States today,” said Barry Meisenberg, M.D., medical director of the AAMC DeCesaris Cancer Institute. “With research and technology, we’ve made major strides in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. Also, we’re providing better coordinated care to address cancer survivors’ emotional, physical and spiritual needs and encourage healthy behaviors that may reduce the risk of relapse.”

“For survivors and their family and friends, National Cancer Survivors Day is a day to celebrate their courage and perseverance in battling a disease as profound as cancer,” said Cathy Brady-Copertino, executive director of the AAMC DeCesaris Cancer Institute. “It gives us an opportunity to come together and support one another.”

A “survivor” is anyone living with a history of cancer—from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. On June 10, survivors are encouraged to bring their family and supporters to the event where they can connect with others while enjoying a variety of speakers, workshops and refreshments.

The program will feature talks from Otis Webb Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer, American Cancer Society, and Dan Shapiro, PhD, professor and chair of humanities at Penn State College of Medicine and author of Mom’s Marijuana: Life, Love and Beating the Odds. Visitors can also attend free workshops to learn about the benefits of nutrition, acupuncture and exercising. The talk will round out a joyous day of celebration, featuring survivors, physicians and care team members, and recognition of community members who have done an especially remarkable job of advancing the cause of survivorship.
