Rock Hall Gets New Electric Mini-Bus

When the Rock Hall Trolley shut down, it left a void in this bayside town. Mark Bryden, manager of Haven Harbour Marina, said owner Bill Brawner “saw a big need with the Rock Hall Trolley out of business.” So the marina bought an electric shuttle bus to fill the void. It is an amenity for Haven Harbour Marina customers, but it also accommodates anyone who wants to ride. The white 14-passenger bus is a product of JH Global Services Inc. of Greenville, S.C., which sells the Star BN96-14 Deluxe for $18,000.

It is completely electric with rechargeable batteries. Two built-in smart chargers take care of 16 golf cart batteries. Bryden said they might add solar panels to the roof with a trickle charger to help keep the batteries topped up. Top speed is a leisurely 25 mph, and it has seat belts and all the equipment needed to make it a legal motor vehicle. The route is an 18-stop loop, including marinas, restaurants, the beach, Main Street, and businesses along Route 20 as far east as Ford’s Seafood and as far north as Spring Cove Marina. The fare is $2.

No Cause Determined For Fatal Rock Hall House Fire

The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal has closed its investigation of a fatal house fire in Rock Hall on April 27th without pinning down the cause. Investigators determined the fire started in a second-floor bathroom of the house that was built around 1925. Given the extensive damage the 1,088 square-foot wood-frame home sustained, a cause could not be determined. Arson was not suspected. The body of Robert E. “Gene” Van Kirk, 67, was located in a rear bedroom on the second floor. The body of Linda S. Van Kirk, 59, was located in a front bedroom. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that both died from smoke inhalation. The Van Kirks, who were married for 32 years, moved to Rock Hall from East Windsor, N.J., in 2004.

Hot off a 2009 Grammy win, LSBM’s music is the embodiment and soul of South Africa. The world was introduced to them when they heard their stunning harmonies on Paul Simon’s “Graceland” and they have continually shared their magic with musical luminaries such as Josh Groban, Taj Mahal, and George Clinton. Founder Joseph Shabalala formed this group with his brothers 40 years ago and while the band continues to evolve and change with the times, the one thing that stays the same is their energetic and completely heart lifting dances. Keep an eye out for the red socks.

Kent Bureau of Investigation Needs Your Help

The Kent Bureau of Investigation has obtained a warrant charging a Rock Hall man with embezzlement in connection with a theft scheme that occurred at Bayside Foods in Rock Hall. The accused is identified as Vincent Robert Deleonardis, 41, previously of the 5000 block of Circle Park Drive, Rock Hall. He is charged with one count of embezzlement, twelve counts of theft and four counts of theft scheme. Deleonardis’ location at this time is unknown.

The investigation began in late January 2010 when the owner of Bayside Foods contacted the Rock Hall Police Department to report a theft by a former employee. A subsequent investigation revealed Deleonardis was the head cashier at Bayside Foods and responsible for the accounting of all daily monetary transactions. During an audit of the business financial transactions, a preliminary total of nearly $95,000 was found to be missing from August 2009 through January 2010. A more in-depth audit revealed nearly $230,000 was unaccounted for while Deleonardis was in charge as head cashier. Evidence revealed that Deleonardis shorted bank deposits and utilized the stores Cool Re-loadable Prepaid Card Plan to divert money onto a prepaid card that he would later withdraw utilizing an ATM machine.

Investigators learned that Deleonardis skipped town shortly after the investigation began. A warrant for Deleonardis arrest is on file and anyone with information of his whereabouts is asked to contact the Kent Bureau of investigation at 410-778-0490 or kbi@mdsp.org. Callers may remain anonymous.

Rock Hall Home Explodes; $8oK Damage

A Rock Hall home was destroyed when propane gas caused an explosion. Investigators say no one was hurt in the explosion. Deputy Fire Marshal Paul Schlotterbeck said the homeowner, Jennifer Kirchner, was not home at the time of the explosion. The single-story wood-frame home is located at 5810 Judefind Avenue. Investigators believe the explosion occurred in the home’s crawl space, probably by a leak in a gas line. The estimated total cost to the home and its contents is $80,000.
