Obi foreground two students Jon (400 x 266)The Queen Anne’s County Arts Council will host an art reception for the participants of their initiative, STArt! (Students, Teachers, Artists). Four artists, four schools, forty students and their art instructors took part in the one-on-one art mentoring program in April. Artists Ric Conn, John Pringle, Jonathan Shaw and Rick Strittmater each taught at one of each of the county’s middle schools: Centreville, Matapeake, Stevensville and Sudlersville giving students a four hour art lesson in various media.

The artwork created represents several mediums including gouache, watercolor, acrylic and graphite. The program pairs professional artists with students for one-on-one instruction to provide a unique and lasting learning experience. This is the second year the initiative has been in place, receiving positive feedback from the students, parents, teachers and gallery visitors.

Program Chair Sharon Lipsius will host the reception on Friday, May 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Art Council’s Centre for the Arts. The public is invited to attend the reception or view the exhibit during business hours from May 18 through June 1.

The program is supported by The Digital Architects, Queenstown Bank, Choptank Electric Trust, Priceless Industries, The Peoples Bank, Maryland State Arts Council and private donors.

March Student Showcase – KIFA Celebrates “Youth Art Month”

Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs. Thousands of American schools participate, often with the involvement of local art museums and civic organizations. In celebration with the schools, the Kent Island Federation of Arts is hosting their 22nd annual Student Art Showcase. The exhibit will run from February 29 through March 31, 2012, with an Open House reception to honor the participants, to be held on Saturday, March 10, from 1 – 4 pm for the Students, Teachers, Principals, Administrators, and family members.

This opportunity gives many art students a chance to have their work on display in a gallery setting, while at the same time offering KIFA the chance to share with the public their wonderful talent. Last year approximately 60 students from 8 schools exhibited over 150 two dimensional, pottery, and assemblage works.

KIFA, a non-profit (501c3) volunteer organization, seeks to develop and allocate resources to provide gallery and studio space, instruction, art shows and events for our members and the greater community. KIFA is partially funded by grants from the United Way and CFC. KIFA, 405 Main St., Stevensville, MD 21666. For more information call 410.643.7424 or go to www.KIFA.us.

Children’s Chesapeake Bay Art On Display At CBMM

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD is hosting a display of 50 pieces of original art from elementary school students in its Van Lennep Auditorium now through March. The show represents young artists from across the Mid-Atlantic who have qualified as semi-finalists in a “Chesapeake Bay Revival Coloring Contest.”

Hosted by Donna Danielle McCartney and The Nautical Mile Series, the contest invited schools from within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed to participate. Students were encouraged to create an original piece of artwork capturing their own interpretation of the Chesapeake Bay and its issues, on a standard 8.5 x 11 piece of paper. The semi-finalists shown at CBMM represent 36 schools from throughout Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and New York.

Each participating school sent one submission package, with a maximum of 15 pictures. Each submission package included all pictures intended to represent the school for their 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes.

The winning poster will be selected in March 2012 with input from contest sponsors, including Donna Danielle McCartney (the author of the Nautical Mile Series), and members of the Chesapeake Conservation Corps, the Chesapeake Bay Trust, and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The winner and their school will win cash and prizes.

The exhibit is open to the public and is free with general admission or for museum members. For more information, visit www.cbmm.org or call 410-745-2916.
