Red Mountain – Old Time String Band

Red Mountain, the old-time string band from Alabama, plays good-time, old-time country music including high-energy dance tunes, old-time blues and songs from the earliest days of country music. The group’s members learned many of their tunes from older fiddlers in Alabama and Tennessee. And, they play in a style that reflects the region in which they live. Guitar virtuoso Frank Vignola is a leading proponent of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz style of playing. In celebration of Reinhardt’s 100th birthday, Vignola has assembled a topnotch quintet for a searing tribute to one of his earliest musical influences. Vignola is a stunning guitarist who has performed in tributes to Django at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and with the Boston Pops to name just a few. Call for reservations. Tickets are $20.

The Chesapeake Bay Community Band, formerly the Kent Island Community Band, will be performing its first concert under the new name at the historic Avalon Theatre. Titled An Old Fashioned Band Concert, the concert will include marches by John Phillip Sousa as well as Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Franz von Suppe’s Pique Dame Overture. Along with several solo features by members of the ensemble, the concert will feature the Kent Island United Methodist Church Choir under the direction of former Queen Anne’s County High School Band Director Mr. Tom Reed. The band and choir will perform Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.

Milkshake featuring Lisa and Mikel is a rock band for kids. The music features an exciting departure from traditional childrens’ music with its high-energy stage act. The act has won over preschoolers wherever it goes.

Maggie Sansone and Friends bring their contemporary, acoustic and early music instruments in new and innovative settings from ancient to modern times with special focus on Celtic (Irish & Scottish) tunes. A drummer and bag piper, Sue Richards will be featured for that St. Patrick’s holiday flavor.

Alison Brown is brilliant genre-bending player who takes the banjo and guitar far beyond their Appalachian roots with a rich, exquisite blend of bluegrass, jazz, Celtic and Latin influences that has been described as simply jaw-dropping. She has won and been nominated for several Grammy awards including a nomination this year for Best Country Instrumental Performance and is often compared to another banjo prodigy, Béla Fleck for her unique style of playing.

This is the third in the series of four free concerts in the Eastern Shore Wind Ensemble’s 2009-2010 season. Directed by Keith Wharton since the band’s founding in 2001, the community concert band offers area wind and percussion musicians the opportunity to continue or resume playing high-quality music in a large ensemble. The band, based in Chestertown, welcomes new members at any time, without fee or audition.
