“The Friends of Al Cantello” announce the 5th annual AL’S RUN, set to take place on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the Kent Island Athletic Club, Kent Island.

Over the course of its’ 5 year existence, The Al Cantello Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund has handed out $43,000 in scholarships to 18 boy and girl high school seniors continuing their lacrosse play in college. Race Director, Mark Fromert, and personal friend to the late Al Cantello Jr., credits the success of Al’s Run and the benefiting scholarship to the community that surrounds it. “This is my favorite run to plan each year. Not only does it hit me on a sentimental level but I am in constant awe of our consistent numbers, the support of the businesses that donate, and the continued participation of our runners year after year.” He added “Our local schools and sports organizations also go out of their way to promote Al’s Run and help us work on a date each year. Our goal is to get as many lacrosse players and community members out here each year to support this. ”

All proceeds from the 8 K (5 mile) run will go directly to the Al Cantello Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are awarded to several local high school senior lacrosse players based on a list of criteria.   Al’s Run plans for up to 300 registered runner’s and walkers each year. This is timed run, but family-focused. It is not unusual to see more kids participating then adults. Ages range from 7 years old to over 60 years old.

The “Friends of Al Cantello Jr” was created by Mark Fromert and Andy Gonzalez. After Cantello’s untimely death in July 2010 due to a boating accident, Fromert and Gonzalez came up with the idea of a scholarship fund. AL’S RUN was introduced to fund their idea because Fromert and Cantello often ran Cottontail Path, where AL’S RUN takes place. Fromert adds “As Race Director, I cannot participate in the race day run but every year as the Al’s Run comes to a close, I run the course alone to honor him personally.”
