Gunston’s Headmaster John Lewis excited alumni, supporters, and community members on Saturday, October 20th as the school launched its Second Century Campaign, announcing that the school had raised 73% of the campaign goal of $4.5 Million for facilities renovations, technology upgrades, and faculty support.
Gunston celebrated its centennial two years ago, and since then the Board of Trustees and school leaders have analyzed the school’s strengths and greatest opportunities. At the kickoff event, held beneath a tent near the school’s waterfront, former faculty members and Honorary Campaign Chairs, Sarah and Tony Everdell, spoke about the historical significance of the capital campaign before conceptual renderings of the campaign’s Master Facilities Plan were unveiled by Lewis.
“The process began with a discussion of what should be next for Gunston,” stated Lewis, “and two priorities emerged, faculty and facilities. This campaign seeks to modernize and enhance our entire academic facility, and will ensure that we have sufficient resources to recruit and retain a talented faculty.”
“While this plan aims to modernize the educational infrastructure of our institution,” Lewis emphasized, “we remain steadfastly committed to maintaining our core values. Gunston is and will be a small school that offers a highly personalized education and nurturing environment.”
Before the crowd of more than 250, it was announced that 100% of Gunston’s Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff had pledged to the campaign. Early success during the quiet phase of the campaign is attributed to the work of Gunston’s Board of Trustees, members of the Campaign Executive Committee, Campaign Chair E. Mitchell Fry, Distinguished Campaign Vice Chairs James A. Clauson and Harry (Stoney) J. Duffey, III.
