Episode 44 of ArtScene | The Podcast proudly features Garnette Hines, art teacher at Kennard Elementary School, in a new February episode that explores creativity, reinvention, and the power of embracing the journey.
Hines brings 25 years of experience as an art educator to the conversation, including 17 years teaching Interactive Media at the high school level before intentionally transitioning to elementary art, where she has spent the past four years teaching students in grades three through five. A former National Art Honor Society Advisor, Master Teacher for the state of Maryland, and mentor educator, Hines has been widely recognized for her impact on students, colleagues, and the broader arts community.
Throughout the episode, Hines reflects on her professional evolution, the joy of working with young artists, and the importance of process over product in both art and life.
“The journey really is the destination,” said Hines. “That’s where the joy is—watching students grow, take risks, and discover things about themselves along the way. Art gives them permission to do that.”
Hines has been a strong advocate for connecting students with authentic art experiences beyond the classroom, frequently partnering with the Academy Art Museum and artists-in-residence to help students see themselves as part of a larger creative world. Her work has earned numerous recognitions, including the MSDE Outstanding Art Educator Award, the Maryland Distinguished Service Award in Career and Technology, the Brewster Merrill Technology Award, and Queen Anne’s County Public Schools’ Energizer Bunny Award. She is also a contributing artist in the annual QACPS Faculty Art Show.
