Tony Bennett Concert

AAUW is sponsoring a trip to Wolf Trap to see Tony Bennett in concert on August 27, 2010 at 8:00 PM.

Tony Bennett takes the crown for longevity.  His career began at the opening of the Triborough Bridge when Mayor Fiorello La Guardia heard him perform in 1936.  Through the years he has modified his style to conform and blend with today’s style of music.

Music critic Mario Tarradell in the Dallas Morning News wrote the following: “The 83 year old living master of inhabiting songs has earned every right to be smiles onstage.  The iconic New Yorker’s career inspires the young crooner (Michael Buble, in particular). The man was class personified, dressed in a black suit and tie.  His head full of gray hair makes him look distinguished.  His relaxed, affable demeanor makes him approachable.  Backed by four accomplished musicians, Bennett offered 90 minutes worth of familiar songs performed with elegant, potent arrangements.  It sounded like an upscale cabaret, or an A-list jazz bar. His pipes aren’t as fluid anymore, but they’re not lacking power.  He can still hit the notes.  Most importantly, he’s an expert at nuance.  ‘Smile,’ an over-covered standard, belongs to him.  He held certain syllables, stretched certain words.  ‘The Best Is Yet to Come’ was jazzy cool.  ‘Maybe This Time,’ was a showstopper in his hands.”

The cost for the bus and admission is $95.  Bus leaves Creamery Lane at 4:30 PM and Kent Island about 5:00 PM.  Bring dinner with you.
