Tours of Historic Courthouse in Queenstown Given by Cecile C. Weich, Esq.

Cecile C. Weich, Esq. is a volunteer at the Historic Courthouse in Queenstown.

With her knowledge of the history of the Courthouse which was established and built in 1708, she greeted visitors on the first Saturday of June and will return on August 4, 2011.

The Courthouse will also be open on the first Saturday in July, September and October. It is part of the Historic Tours of Queen Anne’s County during which the doors of historic sites jointly admit visitors, free of charge.

The Courthouse property since 1782, has served as a home, Warehouse, Drug Store, Grocery Store, Restaurant, Beer Parlor, Post Office, and an Antique Shop.

The Courthouse property was acquired in January, 1977 by Board of Town Commissions; prior to this time, the Board, by resolution, had created the Queenstown Historic Preservation Committee for the purpose of securing and restoring the property.

A third section was built about 1915 on the North West end of the present structure; it was removed during this restoration period.

The depression or unevenness in the roof is due to the erection of the two sections at different periods of time – a span of approximately 100 years.

The flooring dates from the early 19th century alterations when the brick section was added. Originally, the floor may have been dirt.

The dark red paint, covered with whitewash was found on all original elements beneath the 19th century lath and plaster. No paint was in evidence exteriorly, a typical condition of the day, hence, the brown stain to simulate these conditions.

The brick wing was added as a kitchen in 1820-1840. The floor was dirt; the bricks were added at a later date. The bricks themselves pre-date the structure and probably came from some other building.

The furniture designs all represent the late 17th century or early 18th century examples which might have been used here. Reproductions were used because of the extreme scarcity of original pieces, together with the unstable environment in a building without heat and humidity control.
