University of Maryland Shore Regional Health Welcomes New Surgeons

University of Maryland Shore Surgical Care, an affiliate of University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, recently welcomed two general surgeons to its team. Joining Dr. Hugo Bonatti and Susan Ondrushek, Physician Assistant, at the UM Shore Surgical Care practice, located at 503 B Dutchman’s Lane in Easton, are Hazem Elariny, MD, Ph.D., FACS; and Aboubakr Khairat, MBBCh, MRCSI, CABS.

Elariny 7.26.13 hi res (266 x 400)Dr. Elariny obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and earned his Medical Doctorate from the Louisiana State University Medical School in 1990. He completed his residency in General Surgery at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1996. Dr. Elariny completed significant research at the Richard Freeman Institute in New Orleans, investigating the molecular biologic mechanisms of breast cancer, atherosclerosis, transplant rejection and HIV infection. He received special recognition from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Louisiana State University for his work. Upon completing his residency, Dr. Elariny practiced surgery for three years in Louisiana until receiving an appointment to the Medical Staff at Inova Alexandria & Fairfax Hospitals and Arlington Hospital. He has been with Advanced Laparoscopic and General Surgery Associates, located in Vienna, Virginia, since 1999. Dr. Elariny is a Board Certified General Surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member in the American College of Surgeons; the American Society for Bariatric Surgery; the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract; the Society of American Gastroenterologic Surgeons; the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons; the Southeastern Surgical Congress; the Southern Society for Oncology; the American Medical Association; and the Southern Medical Association. Dr. Elariny is an active affiliated Faculty Member at George Mason University, in the Inova-GMU Transitional Research Institute.

Khairat hi res 7.29.13 (266 x 400)Dr. Khairat earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB, BCh) at Ain Shams University in Cairo Egypt. His postgraduate training includes the Egyptian Air Force, where he served as a general practitioner; a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Suez Canal University Hospital in Ismailia, Egypt; a residency in general surgery at Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha, State of Qatar where he completed rotations in pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, urology, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery and surgical intensive care; a residency in pediatric surgery also at the Hamad Corporation where he served as a specialist pediatric surgeon; and a residency in general surgery at the University of Florida in Jacksonville. Most recently, Dr. Khairat has been a Resident of the Department Surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He is certified as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (MRCSI) and by the Arab Board for Medical Specialization (CABS-General Surgery).
