Mohamed Ahmed, MD will offer a special presentation, Kidney Disease in the African American Community, on Wednesday, November 12, 5:30 p.m.at Mt. Olive AME Church in Worton, Md. The free event, which begins with a reception featuring light-fare refreshments, will be hosted by The African American Health Advisory Committee (AHAC) in partnership with the Kent County Shore Community Outreach Team (SCOT) at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, a member organization of University of Maryland Medical System.

“Members of AHAC expressed interest in this topic because chronic kidney disease disproportionately affects the African American community,” said Emily Welsh, MSN, RN, nurse coordinator for SCOT. “This is due to a combination of factors – higher rates of conditions like diabetes and hypertension, genetic makeup, and socioeconomic and systemic barriers to health care. We are excited that Dr. Ahmed is providing this presentation to help inform community members who may be at risk — or who have loved ones who may be at risk — about the disease symptoms and how it can be managed to maintain better health.”

As a provider with University of Maryland Shore Medical Group – Nephrology, Dr. Ahmed sees patients in the Multispecialty Clinic at University of Maryland Shore Medical Pavilion at Denton. Prior to joining the nephrology practice, Dr. Ahmed completed a residency in internal medicine at Rochester Regional Health’s Unity Hospital in Rochester, New York. Previously, he completed fellowships in nephrology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas.
