Several people and businesses were recently recognized for their volunteer efforts at the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center in Grasonville.
At the annual Volunteer Awards Dinner in the CBEC education center, the following 2014 awards were presented:
— John Fitzgerald, Male Volunteer of the Year. He has been a volunteer at CBEC since 2012 and does all the maintenance work on the 510-acre facility.
— Louise Zeitlin, Female Volunteer of the Year. She has been a volunteer since 2012 and monitors the wood ducks, assists with school education programs and kayaking. A graduate of the Legacy Institute for the Environment class, she also advocates for CBEC at events.
Volunteer Coordinator Sue Marquardt said, “While CBEC benefits from numerous volunteers who give up their time, these two individuals are exemplary. Thanks to their time, CBEC prospers in its mission to the community.”
— Steven Kahle Architects, Business of the Year. Kahle and seniors project manager, Kata Perry, were instrumental in providing architectual design work on several CBEC projects for the last 10 years, including the Education Building, beach pavilion and the Knapp Pavilion.
“Steve and Kata are avid nature lovers, so CBEC was a great fit,” said Vicki Paulas,CBEC’s restoration manager. “As volunteers, they are giving of their time and expertise in green design to meet all of our permit deadlines. They really understand how architecture can co-exist with the environment. ”
