Wye River Upper School announced today that it has entered into a contract to purchase the Maryland National Guard Armory in downtown Centreville, Maryland from a private party.
The building which was constructed in 1926 contains over 20,000 square feet of space including a gymnasium / all-purpose room and other spaces which are excellent facilities for use as a school.
The school will immediately begin a study of the design, construction, and environmental requirements with the hopes of completing all necessary alterations in preparation for the 2011-2012 school year.
The acquisition of the building came about in large measure from a rigorous strategic planning process which identified the long term benefit of having a distinct campus for the school. The school has leased space from Chesapeake College since its inception.
The school plans to enter into a Capital Campaign to finance the acquisition and construction requirements of the facility.
Wye River Upper School was founded in 2002 by Chrissy Aull, current Head of School, and Patricia McGlannan, current Board of Trustees Chair. Both were mothers of students who benefited from the Wye River’s unique education style. Since its inception the school has graduated forty students many of whom have gone on to continue their education. This year’s graduating class was its largest with eleven students.
Wye River Upper School is a non-profit, college preparatory, independent high school for grades nine through twelve serving bright students challenged by ADHD, dyslexia, and other unique learning styles, as well as students who may benefit from structure, low student/teacher ratios and creative teaching strategies including state-of-the-art technology.
