Chopteeth is a 14-piece Afrofunk orchestra exploring the common groove between the funkiest, most hip-shakin’ West African and American popular music on the planet. The core of their sound is best described as Afrobeat: a big-band funk invented by Fela Kuti in 1970’s Nigeria. Afrobeat is a spicy stew of modern jazz, Yoruba tribal music and burning, James Brown-inspired rhythms.

The band’s sets feature original compositions along with updates of African dance classics, all while remaining true to the spirit of the music and its message. Band members step to the mic to serve up lyrics in a total of seven different languages.

In February 2009, the musicians and music professionals who are the members of the Washington Area Music Association voted the band Artist of the Year in their annual Wammie Award voting. In 2009 the band also won it’s second Wammie Award for Best World Music Group as well as the awards for Debut CD of the Year and Best World Music CD.

Washington Street will be closed to traffic so that visitors can fill streets and sidewalks with lawn or camp chairs to enjoy the performance. The family-friendly concert series is free and open to the public. Children are welcome and dancing is encouraged!

The free Outdoor Summer Concert Series in Easton is the work of the Avalon Foundation, and is sponsored by these generous organizations/businesses: Fred Frederick Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, the Talbot County Arts Council, Town of Easton, and Easton Police Department.
