Drill Tests Hospital Evacuation Systems

On June 8, Shore Health System participated in a drill to test emergency evacuation systems that would be activated if a hurricane hit Dorchester County.

Volunteer “patients” were transferred from the Dorchester General Hospital to the Memorial Hospital at Easton, where they went through the process of being admitted for the appropriate level of care. Volunteers posing as patients from the Behavioral Health Unit were transported to the Eastern Shore Hospital Center.

The exercise scenario included flooding in the first floor and loss of land line and cell phone coverage. Hospital staff, with help from Cambridge fire fighters, carried the volunteers posing as patients from the second floor to the lobby on back boards, stretchers and sliding evacuation chairs.

“During the drill, we activated systems, equipment and staff just as we would if we got news about a major storm heading our way,” says Gary Poole, director of safety and security for Shore Health System. “We practiced evacuating patients from Dorchester General Hospital and responding to a large influx of people needing care in a short period of time at Memorial Hospital.”

Participating in the drill with Shore Health System staff were emergency medical services and health department personnel from Talbot and Dorchester counties; City of Cambridge Fire Department; and law enforcement officers from the City of Cambridge, the Town of Easton and the Maryland State Police. A local group of Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service operators assisted with communication and members of the faith community volunteered for patient roles.

“Everyone worked well together and stayed calm under very difficult circumstances,” says Poole. “People from across Shore Health System stepped up to lend their expertise and our partners in the community made it possible for us to have the resources and manpower required to execute a drill of this magnitude.”

Poole, adds, “We learned a lot that will help us respond if we need to evacuate one of our hospitals during a weather emergency.”

Dorchester General Hospital Receives CAP Accreditation

Dorchester General Hospital’s main laboratory in Cambridge has been awarded accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.

David Danner, MD, PhD, the laboratory’s director, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the “excellence of the services being provided.” Dorchester General Hospital is one of the more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide.

The CAP laboratory accreditation program, begun in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program. During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine staff qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for patients.

The College of American Pathologist is a medical society serving nearly 17,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. It is the world’s largest association composed exclusively of board certified pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The CAP is an advocate for high quality and cost-effective medical care.

Visitation Restrictions Still in Effect at Memorial and Dorchester General Hospitals

As flu and gastroenteritis seasons begin, Shore Health System will maintain the same visitation limits that were put in place when the H1N1 flu arrived in the community last fall.

Symptoms of flu include fever of 100 degrees or higher, and either a cough, sore throat or runny nose. Symptoms of gastroenteritis include fever, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea.

General visiting hours at The Memorial Hospital at Easton and Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge remain at 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.

•    At Memorial Hospital and Dorchester General Hospital, inpatient visitors are strictly limited to only two adults per patient. No one under 18 years of age may visit patients or visit elsewhere in the hospitals, including the lobbies and the reception and waiting areas. These visiting restrictions and even stricter rules apply at Memorial Hospital in the Birthing Center and in the pediatrics unit, where risks of influenza are significant to mothers, newborns and young children.

•    Children under the age of 18 will not be permitted to visit in the hospitals or any outpatient facilities unless they are coming for treatment. Shore Health System reminds adults to make child care arrangements for children under 18 so they are not accompanying adults who come to the hospitals or other facilities for testing, surgeries, therapy or patient visits.

•    Visitors should ask themselves whether they really need to visit a hospitalized patient during flu and gastroenteritis season. People who are ill should not visit patients in the hospital and should call in advance before arriving for their own scheduled appointments for testing or treatment.

•    As always, visitors must follow any special precautions that are posted. These precautions may require that visitors wear protective items including gloves, gowns or masks before entering patient rooms. Signs are posted at the doors to patient rooms when these isolation precautions are in effect.

•    All visitors must wash their hands before and after visiting a patient. All patient rooms are equipped with alcohol hand sanitizer pumps and hand sanitizer is available throughout the hospitals and at all Shore Health System facilities.
