Shore Regional Health Laboratories Receive Accreditation from the College of American Pathologists

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) recently awarded accreditation to three University of Maryland Shore Regional Health laboratories. Based on results of a recent on-site inspection, as part of the CAP’s Accreditation Programs, UM Shore Medical Center at Easton’s Main Laboratory and Bay Street Laboratory, and UM Shore Emergency Center at Queenstown’s Laboratory all received CAP accreditation.

David B. Danner, MD, PhD, director of both UM Shore Medical Center at Easton laboratory locations and Reinhardt O. Sahmel, MD, PhD, director of the laboratory at UM Shore Emergency Center at Queenstown, were advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. The three Shore Regional Health laboratories are among the more than 7,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.

During the CAP accreditation process, which is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.

QA Emergency Center Celebrates One-Year Anniversary

In conjunction with Emergency Nurses Day on October 12, Shore Health System will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center. This celebration is an opportunity to recount the success of Maryland’s only free-standing emergency center in a rural community. Guests will meet the physicians, nurses and other clinical care providers who save lives at the center 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The Center is located at 115 Shoreway Drive at the intersection of Nesbitt Road and US Route 50 in Queenstown. Festivities begin at 11:00 am and will include a light lunch. As part of the celebration, the staff of the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center will recognize their colleagues in law enforcement, fire safety and emergency management services for the many ways they work together to care for the community.

Since opening on October 4, 2010, the staff of the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center has treated over 13,000 people of all ages, far exceeding projections for how much the center would be used in its first year.

The Queen Anne’s Emergency Center began as a partnership between Queen Anne’s County government, the University of Maryland Medical System and Shore Health System. The center’s staff includes board certified emergency medicine physicians, experienced emergency nurses and hospital-experienced radiology and laboratory technologists.

Equipped with 13 treatment rooms and onsite diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center has the resources needed to care for people of all ages who come with acute illnesses, injuries and trauma as well as minor injuries. When patients need advanced diagnostic testing and treatment only available in an inpatient hospital setting, arrangements are made for transport by ambulance or helicopter to a hospital.

The residents of Queen Anne’s County have shown their enthusiasm for this long-awaited healthcare service by supporting many fundraising activities, which have raised more than $1 million for equipment used every day to treat the residents of the community.

Chester Man In Shock Trauma After Crashing Into Home

A Chester man drove his van through three yards in Marling Farms, striking two parked cars, before crashing into the corner of a home on Queen Anne Drive, according to the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office. Benjamin B. Gillis, 54, was entering the community on Queen Anne Drive when a medical condition caused him to lose control of his 1995 Ford van. The van left the road and traveled through the yard of Thomas E. Bowman, striking his Honda Del Sol in the driveway. It continued through the yard of David A. Newberry Jr., hit the Mercury Cougar in his driveway, and continued through the next yard, finally coming to a stop after striking the home of Robert L. and Stacey L. Owen. The Owens were home at the time of the crash, but they were not in the bedroom where the van hit and were not hurt, police said.

Gillis was found breathing, but unconscious in the van. He regained consciousness and became combative while emergency medical responders were working on him, police said. Gillis was taken by ambulance to the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center in Grasonville, then flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for further treatment. The crash left the corner of the house resting on the front bumper of the van, and police remained on the scene while a work crew made emergency repairs to the house’s foundation.

Centreville Accident Sends One To Shock-Trauma

A Millington woman was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and a Centreville man was taken to the emergency room following an accident last week at the intersection of Rolling Bridge Road and U.S. Route 301. Wendy Bakeoven, 39, of Millington, was listed in fair condition after being flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center by a Maryland State Police medevac helicopter.

John Roschy, 70, of Centreville was traveling south in a 2002 Toyota Highlander. He entered into the lanes of U.S. 301 north and struck Bakeoven’s 2007 Nissan Maxima on the driver’s side door. Bakeoven’s car spun and went off the road and through a guardrail before stopping at the bottom of an embankment. Roschy remained in his vehicle and was speaking with police and emergency workers after the accident. He was later taken by ambulance to the Queen Anne’s County Emergency Center. No information was available regarding Roschy’s condition.

The Queen Anne’s Emergency Center began as a partnership between Queen Anne’s County government, the University of Maryland Medical System and Shore Health System. These organizations came together to add a level of emergency medical services not currently available in this part of the Mid-Shore region.

The Queen Anne’s Emergency Center is one of only three freestanding emergency centers in Maryland and the only one in a rural area. The facility consists of approximately 16,000 square feet of space with 13 treatment rooms and onsite diagnostic imaging and laboratory services.

When it opens on October 4, the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center will operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year, treating patients with acute illnesses, injuries and trauma as well as minor injuries. The Emergency Center will be a full service emergency department, just like one at a hospital. The center will be staffed by board certified emergency medicine physicians, experienced ER nurses and hospital-experienced radiology and laboratory technologists.

For patients who are assessed to need specialized diagnostics or treatment only available in an inpatient setting, transport from the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center to a hospital will be arranged. The Queen Anne’s Emergency Center campus is equipped with a helipad for convenient landing of helicopters operated by Maryland State Police and other emergency medical services transport organizations.

Commissioners Dedicate Road At Emergency Center

The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners honored the late Leonard Smith on September 7 with the dedication of a road named in his memory. The new road is located just off Route 18 in Grasonville adjacent to the new Queen Anne’s Emergency Center. Smith’s family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, were on hand to help cut the ribbon for Leonard Smith Drive.

Smith called Grasonville home his entire life, served four consecutive terms as Queen Anne’s County Commissioner and was the only County Commissioner to serve as president of the Maryland Association of Counties. During his tenure, Smith helped develop Mowbray Park in Stevensville, the Chesterwye Center in Grasonville and served as host for Queen Anne’s County’s celebration of the national Bicentennial which included a visit from Princess Anne. Smith died in 2009 at the age of 92.

“We are so glad to have so many family members here and it is with great pride we honor a man who gave so much of himself to his community and to Queen Anne’s County,” said County Commission President Gene Ransom, who also lives in Grasonville.

After the dedication, the Commissioners and gathered crowd toured the Queen Anne’s Emergency Center, which is a collaborative effort of the county, Shore Health System and University of Maryland Medical System. The facility will be dedicated on September 30 and will officially open on Monday, October 4.
